Tom 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
Firstly, what a great course! Despite having a relatively advanced knowledge of fitness and health concepts I found the course highly informative and motivating. Having trained with Alan for a number of years I can vouch that following his advice along with putting in the hard work can really help you achieve your goals.
Joanne 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
I attended a 6 week course with Alan at Explain Fitness and thoroughly enjoy it! Alan made things really easy to understand through well thought out explanations. The course identified new ways of looking at the calories I consumed and helped me work out the correct amounts of protein, fats and carbohydrates I needed to fuel my body.
I would highly recommend attending an Explain Fitness course as there is so much information on health, fitness and nutrition out there (correct and incorrect!) but Explain Fitness takes the hassle out of trawling websites, books and articles to get that desired information. It is also supplied to you in a handy online webinar, where you can ask questions and interact with others on the course and obviously enjoy the witty banter with your tutor Alan as you learn. Its a win - win situation!
Bob 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
Having struggled to maintain any weight loss, and with an interest in different ways to live a more healthy life, I was delighted to participate in the course which Alan offers.
I found Alan's insight very helpful when trying to understand the finer details of some of the topics. That's not to say that the course is complex in any way, Alan describes things in a straight forward manner which allowed me to understand all areas covered and we also had the opportunity to ask questions frequently which also helped.
The format is also convenient, the presentation is clear and with Alan's guidance through everything it makes the course matter easy to understand and absorb. The added bonus is that if you happen to miss a live webinar you can still view and listen to the whole presentation with the links that are provided. I did this on one occasion and found it almost as good and the live version. Obviously there is not an opportunity for questions!!
Alan's experience and knowledge shone through during this course and I would highly recommend any one the courses for anyone with an interest in their health/lifestyle/body all around work, rest and play in a modern world!
Louise 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
The Explain Fitness course, although just an introductory course, taught me more about diet and healthy eating than I'd ever learnt from a gym or personal trainer previously. Although I work in healthcare and understand Nutrition from a healing point of view, it was very helpful to understand how to assess an individuals calorie intake and what the basic calorie requirements are for our own body to function on a basic level. Alan
taught us how to assess our own diets, as individuals and not just a generic figure given to a certain age group. It was all based on our own statistics. He showed us that each individual will require different ratios of each food group and how to calculate these. It was a very personalised course and Alan was always available if we had any questions or we need to clarify anything. The course itself was very easy to access and to use, even as an overseas candidate with terrible Internet access!
Maxine 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
I always felt like I kind of knew what I should be eating, when I should be eating, how much I should be eating to optimise my fitness, but I wanted more information. Over the course of the 6 week course Alan gave me the benefit of his experience, backed up by cold hard science, in an entertaining way. I learned that some of what I thought I knew was wrong, and that there was a whole lot more to know about fitness nutrition than I first thought. Alan explained everything really clearly in layman terms and encouraged questions and feedback often. Armed with the knowledge he passed on and the support of the group I made manageable changes to how I was eating and as a result I feel like I have bags more energy for exercising.
Mandy 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
Alan was very informative and approachable throughout. I now have increased knowledge around nutrition and common myths that circle the fitness industry. Something I'll always keep in mind since participating in this course is to schedule health and fitness in to my diary like any other appointment, our health should always be a priority! I would highly recommend Explain Fitness courses.
Susan, 6 week Explain Fitness course October 2016 - November 2016
I was lucky enough to take part in Alan’s 6 week course. I found it very informative and I learnt a lot of new things from it, which I hope to put into practice asap. Alan answered any queries quickly and effectively (I had a query regarding illness and diet) I would not hesitate to tell anyone to join Alan’s courses if you want to improve you overall fitness and diet choices.
Paul Kieran August 2016 - November 2016
I used to play gaelic football to a relatively high standard in Ireland and was in pretty decent shape with a fighting weight of 13.5st. With the onset of an office based career, my weight has continually fluctuated over the years. I have embarked on various fad diets or followed short term training plans for sporadic adventure race events, followed shortly after by a return to unhealthy habits with my weight reaching its peak in August 2016 at nearly 18st....Action was clearly needed.
I started with Alan in Aberdeen in August 2016 with a number of goals in mind namely: - (1) vanity: lose some weight for an upcoming wedding suit fitting and (2) develop a more sustainable approach to training and nutrition and work towards a return to my target weight of 14st.
Since commencing weekly PT sessions with Alan, I have gained a better appreciation of the importance of nutrition and food quality as well as an enhanced understanding to the importance of strength training to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. It hasn't been all plain sailing but Alan has been very supportive by providing regular reviews of my food tracker and pointers to navigate me back on course. Despite having a lot of past exposure to training and gym routines, Alan's PT sessions were fresh and continually pushed me to my limits.
As of November 2016, I am 50% of my way towards achieving my long term goal having lost nearly 2st and am very positive that I will reach my longer term goal next Spring, just in time for my wedding. More importantly, time with Alan has enabled me to develop training and nutrition skills that will enhance my life
Paul is a great lad. He trains so hard and his application to his nutrition is excellent. He has continued to make nice steady progressions in our time together and I wish him all the best for his wedding and his future.
Callum O'Brien, September 2016 - November 2016
Having only worked with Alan for a short period of time I've noticed the difference immediately. His knowledge and enthusiasm in training is contagious, and he has pushed me to make major improvements, not only in the gym, but also lifestyle changes. I'd highly recommend Alan to anyone looking either to improve, or just to get started.
I only worked with Callum for a short while but long enough to teach him how to perform all the main lifts correctly. I leave him confident that he has the knowledge and enthusiasm to continue his progression alone.
Phyllis, March 2015 - November 2016
As I have Osteoporosis I was advised to go to a gym, however I found I was concerned that I might have hurt myself, or made things worse.
I approached Alan and found him very patient, giving me confidence and encouragement to push myself to lift weights I never would have done. Although I didn't need to lose weight, I am more toned and my balance has also improved.
My nutrition has also improved, I thought I was eating enough/healthy but have learned so much from Alan, I would highly recommend him.
Phyllis was a fantastic client to have. Always cheery and chirpy, she understood the benefit of weight training to her health, and she stuck to it religiously. I write this on the day of our 2nd last session together, and I must say I will miss her.
Kirsten Reid, February 2016 - November 2016
After receiving ACL reconstruction on my knee, (an injury received from playing Roller Derby) 6 months of recovery/physiotherapy and no exercise for 8 months prior to injury, I was ready to start back at the gym. With a basic knowledge of cardio and weight training, I was apprehensive to go alone after I was released from physiotherapy and still being in recovery, I was in fear of aggravating the knee. Not having used a Personal Trainer before, I decided to look through the list of PTs on the Pure Gym website. After researching the specialist area and qualifications on each PT, Alan Urquhart was the trainer who stood out the most for me, especially given his experience dealing with injury prevention and rehabilitation.
My goal when I started with Alan was to get back to full contact training for Roller Derby, to work on building strength for the knee and to make me a stronger player, physically. Not only am I back to full contact training after 4 months of working with Alan, I play in my first competitive game in a few weeks time. The training plans that Alan supplies me are enjoyable and this keeps me motivated. Nutrition is another area he excels in; his advice and support in nutrition helps me with my training goals. I still continue to train with Alan as I want to be the best I can be for my sport; he's the one who can help me achieve that.
Alan is patient, understanding, supportive and approachable. While being professional, he can still have a good laugh!
Alan's knowledge and years of experience have been invaluable in getting me back on track! Book a session, you will not be disappointed!
Kirsten has been a very interesting client to train. Every day is a school day for both of us, with Kirsten learning how to lift weights and me learning about Roller Derby! Her application and commitment to training has led to a faster than planned return to skating and full contact training. I always look forward to our sessions and progressing her that little bit further or teaching her something new.
Marie Burdass, April 2012 - November 2016
I have been training with Alan for 5 years now and can honestly say I look forward to my weekly PT session. It is refreshing to come across somebody who truly cares about their profession and their clients. The fact that Alan has been in the fitness industry for 19 years is evident and I like the fact that he is keen to extend his knowledge and continues to study and attend courses and I have never managed to catch him out yet with a fitness question or fact and not for lack of trying! And if he doesn't know the answer off the top of his head he always comes back with one. I came across Alan by chance, I had been let down by a PT and Alan stepped in and that was 5 years ago and I have never looked back. I am probably one of Alan's mature clients and I can honestly say that I never expected to be able to complete and enjoy the weight training and manage the lifts at my age, a young 58! I most certainly wouldn't have attempted or known my capabilities without Alan's expertise and guidance. I train 4 to 5 times a week (one of those days with Alan) and particularly like the after care information and incentives that Alan sends out to all his clients and he is always happy to personalise training programmes/dietary plans, goals, tips or any fitness related enquiries you may have. Would I recommend him? Without hesitation, great value for money, quite a dry sense of humour but above all, a true professional and I'd like to think after all this time a friend too. My main goal is to continue training for as long as I possibly can, along with Alan's coaching, enthusiasm and dedication.
Marie is my longest serving client. She is a very dedicated trainer, a very cheery character, and a good friend. We have covered a variety of training methods over the years but she mainly comes to me for heavier weight training where she likes having the insurance of a PT with her to help with technique and to spot her. She also brings me soup on occasions!
Nithin Gopakumar, January 2013 - January 2016
I joined Pure Gym in January 2013 and since then I have been training with Alan. When I joined the gym, I weighed over 100 kg and desperately needed to trim up. I realised the need for proper guidance and fortunately decided to take up a programme with Alan. Alan has been very supportive throughout. He helped me get used to the gym conditions by providing light and simple workout sessions initially and then gradually intensified it. This helped me to enjoy the things I am doing rather than considering it as an extra effort.
Apart from support in the workout sessions, Alan constantly advised me on my diet. So, I was always able to maintain a balance between how much I eat and how much I work out. With all my efforts and the invaluable support and guidance from Alan, I lost more than 15 kg in the first 4 months. I can, without any doubt, say that this wouldn't have been possible without Alan's support. Cheers Alan for all the help.
Nithin has been one of my best weight loss clients. He progressed from 108 kg and 31% body fat, to at his best 81kg and under 15% body fat through nice healthy, steady losses each month. I couldn't think of many more people that give as much effort as Nithin does in each session. He religiously sticks to each training programme I give him, and his attention to his nutrition has been a huge factor as well.
Pamela Niven, October 2013 - September 2015
I started working with Alan in early October 2013 after my previous PT moved away and recommended Alan to me.
From my very first session, it was obvious that Alan's main priority was the needs of his client. I did not have a specific target to meet or goal to reach but I wanted to be fitter and more toned. Alan explored my food diary and quickly realised I was not eating enough. He took the time to explain to me the benefits of eating more and encouraged me to try new foods that were good at building up my calories, that wouldn't make me gain a lot of weight. At that time I had an unhealthy relationship with food and he worked hard with me. There was a time I was in a bad place with food and I emailed Alan. He took the time to send me a lengthy reply even though he was busy and it helped me immensely.
I have had over 100 workout sessions with Alan and can honestly say that because each and every one is tailored to my needs, I have enjoyed them all (if there's something that doesn't work for me then we won't do them again) but that's not just to do with the exercise - we have had a lot of laughs between exercises and he indulges me in my two favourite topics of conversations - football and weather!!
I would recommend Alan 110% as a PT. He is excellent at his job; he cares about his clients and wants the best for us all. In the last 15 months, I have come on so far - I'm fitter and healthier than I've ever been and I have come on a long way in terms of body image too. You can't put a price on that really but he does and it's excellent value for money.
Training with Pamela can be a laugh a minute! She is committed to training and looks to enjoy each and every session. Her health and nutrition knowledge has improved in the time that we have trained together and through our journey in the gym, I feel we have become good friends.
Chris Low, May 2013 - December 2015
After working out at the gym on my own for a few months, I realised I was making very little progress. That's when I approached Alan, and I'm so glad I did. Alan was great at finding out exactly what I wanted to achieve. He identified both my weak areas and my strengths, then devised a workout plan and gave me nutritional advice that would help me to achieve my goals.
I have met with Alan once a week for the last 2 years and I have seen a great improvement in my general fitness levels. My physical appearance also continues to change and improve thanks to the fun and interesting workouts he devises which keep me motivated. Alan is great at encouraging you to go that little bit further than you might on your own, and his knowledge and understanding has helped me to achieve so much more than I would have without his help.
I would recommend Alan to anyone looking to lose weight, improve their general health and fitness or to tone up or bulk up, you will not be disappointed.
Chris is nothing more than a fat burning machine! Since he started and took on board the nutritional advice and training advice given, he has made good steady progress in his weight loss journey. He works hard in his PT sessions and when training by himself. He will always get in his sessions whether it is at 6am or 10pm, he doesn't make excuses, he just gets it done.
Donna MacRae, October 2013 - November 2016
I began training with Alan after my previous PT left Aberdeen. I had been training with my first PT for over a year so it was a daunting thought moving to a different PT because you become accustomed to how your current PT trains. However, there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Training with Alan is fun. He is great at gauging what level of fitness you are currently at, and therefore what you are capable of doing. Alan has been able to push me to limits I never imagined I was capable of. In particular, having never tried any sort of weight training, Alan incorporated weights into one of my twice weekly hourly PT's with him. I feel like I've never looked back. After experiencing weight "training", at 5 foot 1 inch, I ultimately wished to be able to achieve weighted squats at 50 kg. Thanks to Alan, I managed to reach 75 kg squats. I also had the desire to be able to do one pull-up before the end of the year, and I achieved that in a few months.
I had originally signed up to work with a PT because I was 37 years old, had stopped doing any form of exercise for approximately 7 months, which had pushed my weight up to 11 st 2 lbs. It was time to do something about my health and physique before I hit 40. I recognised that certainly initially, I would find it difficult to self-motivate, and that I would need someone to help me until exercise became a part of everyday life. I've managed to get my weight to around 9 st 6 lbs, have built up some muscle and a more toned/leaner look and I can also fit into size 10 clothes.
I still train with Alan regularly and look forward to my sessions, particularly weights and any type of boxing. Although I do not have any particular physical event type goals, I continue to want to push my body, and in between my PT's with Alan, I enjoy "competing" against individuals who are half my age in gym classes.
Signing up with a PT was the best idea I've had! If you train with Alan, you're guaranteed to achieve any goals you set yourself, will have fun and banter doing it, as long as you're prepared to work hard.
Donna is one of my longest serving and most consistent clients. She never misses a session and always says how much she looks forward to them each week. Donna compliments our sessions by visiting various other classes where she is known for her hard graft and smiley persona. She has also been known to bring me food when she makes too much of it! My life would be very weird without our sessions on a Monday and Thursday
Will Farquharson, June 2013 - September 2016
I started with Alan in a bold bid to fight back against the beer belly. I used to visit the gym ad hoc and troddle along on a treadmill - fairly samey-samey stuff, so it was difficult to keep motivated, and it wasn't really getting me anywhere. Alan took those monotonous gym visits and turned them into hour long sessions of admittedly gruelling hard work, but always with plenty of variety to keep up a strong element of fun! With a repertoire of hundreds of exercises, covering everything from core, to strength, to cardio (boxing - didn't see myself doing that!), the gym is now fun again, and with this new found motivation, what started as a fairly average and slightly plump office worker is now in the top fitness category of a Cooper Run Test! I've never felt fitter and healthier, which obviously spills into all other aspects of life, right down to general happiness and the ability to focus at work. For this reason, I can really vouch for the value for money, and the fact I've been with Alan for years is testament to that.
Will is one of my longest serving clients. He gives his all and isn't happy unless he is crawling out of the gym after a workout! At the moment he trains with me once a week by himself for some high intensity fat burning and then a second visit each week with his best buddy Ross to lift weights.
Shona Manson, October 2013 - November 2016
I have tried and tried over the years to 'get fit' and maintain an acceptable weight. I have joined numerous gyms, gone for a few weeks but always given up. Then in my early to mid 50s I decided that I could not keep going as I had been. No exercise, yo-yo dieting and feeling negative about myself. After a serious talk with myself, I started hillwalking and joined a gym! Would I be able to sustain this exercise regime? And lose weight?
One of the first things I noticed in the gym was the number of people having personal training sessions. After a lot of deliberation I decided to dip my toes in the water. I knew I needed advice and guidance regarding exercise.
And dip my toes in the water I did. And I cannot believe how having a personal trainer has changed my life. Three years on and I still have twice weekly sessions.
Having a personal trainer is so much more than exercising. I have regular health checks, exercise programmes, information about diet, nutrition, sleep and email contact if I need advice in between sessions. I now know how to do each of the exercises properly, so I am not putting undue pressure on my back, knees or other joints. But most of all having a personal trainer has given me motivation to keep myself fit and in shape and confidence in myself. Having a personal trainer has pushed me to new limits. I am lifting weights I did not think I'd ever be capable of lifting.
Having a personal trainer has transformed my life! At 57, I feel and look far better than I ever have. I have lost weight and sustained the loss. I am the fittest I have ever been.
My personal trainer, Alan Urquhart, is such an amazing guy. He focuses on his clients and is genuinely interested in each one of them. He loves his job and never once have I seen him frustrated or impatient. He listens to me and asks for my views and contributions. After 3+ years with him, he probably knows me better than I know myself. He knows how to motivate me and encourages me to stretch and push myself. He is full of knowledge about nutrition and health which we regularly discuss. I owe a lot to Alan. I don't think I would have become so focused on and committed to exercise and fitness if it were not for him.
Some people may say that the sessions are expensive. But you pay for what you get. For me, it is money so well spent!! And I have no intention of stopping my twice weekly sessions with Alan.
Shona is an amazing lady. She has such a busy life but she has exercise high on her priority list and she always fits in her sessions. Her hard graft and willingness to listen and learn make her an ideal client.
Tom Reilly April 2012 - April 2013
I have always wanted to increase my strength and muscle size, but struggle to motivate myself. I started training with Alan, as I thought getting a PT would help with my motivation issues. Alan's expertise has really helped me progress, including introducing me to innovative programmes, such as the get strong to get big programme which saw me progress from benching 18 kg dumbbells to 36 kg and squats from 50 kg to 100 kg. Regular health checks helped me keep track of how I was doing, with Alan tailoring my programme to keep up with my goals. Alan also provided excellent dietary advice, which not only helped me in my time at the gym, but made me feel less tired in day to day life. I couldn't recommend Alan as a PT highly enough.
Tom was one of my original clients and is now my training partner. He was very consistent with his training, seeing me twice a week and doing one session a week by himself. He put great effort into his sessions, and his nutrition which led to muscle and strength increases as well as body fat reduction. Tom finished using my services shortly before taking up an internship in Canada. On returning to Scotland, and knowing how hard this guy could train, I recruited Tom as a training partner rather than as a client.
Ewa Maria Wisthal April 2015 September 2015
Alan is very competent as a personal trainer. I've been training with him from April to September 2015 where we've covered a huge number of various exercises focusing on posture correction. I've asked hundreds of questions about proper techniques and Alan was always able to explain it clearly and correct me if I was doing something that will potentially cause an injury. Alan would also show me alternative ways of working the same group of muscles and explain ways of progression.
We've worked mainly with free weights but I've also asked for explanations on how to use other gym equipment and Alan also taught me various supersets and HIIT methods. I've made good progress in the time we've trained together and I'm also more confident to exercise on my own.
Alan is easy to communicate with and responds to personal issues and targets; I'd certainly train with Alan again and can recommend him with no hesitation.
Ewa was a great client to have. I always ask my clients if they have any questions, and Ewa has hundreds! Her eagerness to learn kept me on my toes. She worked hard and became technically very efficient in what she wanted to learn. I feel confident that with what I have taught her that she can train herself effectively in the future.
Tracy Shaw, weight loss class October - November 2015
I attended my first ever Pure Loser weight loss class after being coaxed on by a friend. Alan was very helpful and knew exactly what he was talking about from a scientific point of view, which as a scientist made me feel at ease that he knew what he was on about. The main points he illustrated has significantly changed my view of food for the better and so hopefully the rest will follow on. The training sessions he gave us to do were easy to follow and easy to do at home or in the gym. Would definitely recommend!
Winston Gomez, weight loss class October - November 2015
Two words spring to mind: conscientious and caring, which describes Alan's approach to his craft. I learned so much in a short time. I highly recommend Alan to solve your unique fitness needs.
Karen Martha, weight loss class October - November 2015
I have both trained with Alan and attended a weight loss class led by him. During training, Alan made me feel very comfortable (impressive given how ridiculous I am at the gym) and was very knowledgeable. I learnt a lot during the 6 week weight loss course, although Alan was equally as helpful in helping me with my under eating. Finally, and maybe most importantly, he always cheers up any gym visit with a cheery wave.
